Ooty sits at roughly 2,240 m in the Nilgiri hills, so it stays cooler than the plains all year round. There's no bad time to visit. The best time depends on what you want from the trip: blue skies and busy gardens, misty green hills, or quiet, cold mornings.
March to June: summer and peak season
This is Ooty's busiest season, and for good reason. Days are mild and sunny while the plains of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka swelter, and the gardens are in full bloom.
- Weather: pleasant days, cool evenings. A light jacket is enough for most of the day.
- Highlights: the Ooty Flower Show at the Government Botanical Garden in May, roses in bloom at the Rose Garden, and good visibility from Doddabetta Peak.
- Things to know: this is when school holidays bring the biggest crowds. Hotels fill up early, roads into town can be congested, and popular spots get busy by late morning. Book your stay and your cab in advance, and start sightseeing early.
July to September: monsoon
The south-west monsoon turns the Nilgiris a deep green. Rain comes and goes, and mist often rolls across the tea estates and lakes.
- Weather: cool and damp, with frequent showers and fog, especially in the afternoons.
- Highlights: waterfalls like Pykara Falls are at their fullest, the tea country is at its greenest, and there are far fewer tourists.
- Things to know: views from high points like Doddabetta can disappear into cloud, and wet ghat roads call for an experienced driver. Keep your plans flexible and visit viewpoints early in the day, when skies are usually clearer.
October to February: cool and clear
After the monsoon the air clears and the hills are still green, which makes this a great time for photographs. It gets properly cold as winter sets in.
- Weather: crisp, sunny days. December and January nights can drop close to freezing, and frost is common on open grassland in the early morning.
- Highlights: clear views, quiet roads outside holiday weekends, and pleasant weather for walks in the pine forest and along the Pykara road.
- Things to know: pack proper warm layers. Late December brings a short holiday rush around Christmas and New Year.
So, when should you go?
- For gardens and the Flower Show: April to May.
- For waterfalls, mist and fewer crowds: July to September.
- For clear views and cool, comfortable sightseeing: October to February.
Whenever you visit, the easiest way to see Ooty is with a local driver who knows when to beat the queues and which viewpoints are clear that day. Take a look at our Ooty tour packages, read the Ooty travel guide for the main places to visit, or book a cab with Garuda Travels.
