Ooty travel guide

Places to visit, how to get here and how to plan your days in the Queen of Hill Stations, from the people who drive these roads every day.

Ooty, officially Udhagamandalam, sits at roughly 2,240 m in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu. Cool weather, tea estates, lakes and forested viewpoints have made it one of South India's best-loved hill stations. Most of its attractions are spread out along hill roads, so a little planning goes a long way.

Best places to visit in Ooty

These are the places our travellers ask for most often. The gardens, the lake and Doddabetta fit comfortably into one day in and around town; Coonoor and the Pykara road each deserve a half or full day of their own.

Ooty town

Government Botanical Garden

Ooty's best-known garden climbs the lower slopes of Doddabetta in terraces of lawns, flower beds and glasshouses, and includes a fossilised tree trunk. It hosts the Ooty Flower Show every May. Arrive early in peak season to avoid the crowds.

Tea Factory & Estates

Tea gardens cover the slopes around Ooty and Coonoor. A factory visit shows how fresh leaves are withered, rolled and dried, and usually ends with a tasting. The estates themselves make some of the best photographs of the trip.

Pykara road

Pine Forest

On the road from Ooty towards Pykara, a slope of tall, evenly planted pines runs down towards the Kamaraj Sagar reservoir. It is a short, easy walk and a favourite stop for photographs.

Shooting Point

Also known as the Wenlock Downs, these rolling grasslands near the 9th Mile on the Pykara road have been a backdrop for many films. Expect wide open views and cool wind.

Coonoor

Coonoor: Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose & Lamb's Rock

Nilgiris

Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Part of the Mountain Railways of India World Heritage Site, the toy train climbs from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor through tunnels, bridges and tea country. Tickets sell out quickly, so book well in advance and plan a cab for the return or onward journey.

Nilgiris

Mudumalai

The Mudumalai tiger reserve lies on the Ooty–Mysore route. Forest roads through the reserve offer a chance to see elephants, deer and other wildlife. The direct road down via Kalhatti is steep, with many hairpin bends, so it is best travelled with an experienced hill driver.

How to reach Ooty

  • By air: Coimbatore International Airport is the nearest airport, about 90 km away. The drive up through Mettupalayam and the Coonoor ghat road takes around three hours. We run Coimbatore Airport to Ooty cab transfers.
  • By train: Mettupalayam is the railhead at the foot of the hills. From there, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train climbs to Ooty via Coonoor. Seats are limited, so book early.
  • By road from Bangalore or Mysore: Ooty is roughly 270 km from Bangalore and 125 km from Mysore, via the forest roads of Bandipur and Mudumalai. Forest check-posts on this route close at night, so plan to cross in daylight.

Getting around Ooty

Ooty town is compact, but most viewpoints, tea estates and waterfalls are 10–30 km out on narrow, winding roads. Hiring a local cab for the day is the most practical way to sightsee. Your driver handles the hairpin bends and parking, and knows which places to visit first to beat the crowds. See our Ooty taxi service or pick a ready-made route from our Ooty tour packages.

Best time to visit Ooty

Ooty is pleasant all year. March to June brings warm days and the peak holiday crowds, including the Flower Show at the Botanical Garden in May. July to September is the monsoon: green, misty and quieter, with waterfalls at their fullest. October to February is cool and clear, and December and January nights can drop close to freezing. Read our season-by-season guide to the best time to visit Ooty.

Suggested Ooty itineraries

  • One day in Ooty: the Botanical Garden, Rose Garden, Ooty Lake, Doddabetta and a tea factory.
  • Two days in Ooty: add Coonoor's viewpoints, or head out along the Pykara road to the pine forest, Shooting Point and Pykara Falls.

Ooty travel tips

  • Pack layers. Mornings and evenings are cool even in summer, and it can get properly cold in winter.
  • Start early on weekends and holidays. Popular spots like the Botanical Garden and Doddabetta get busy by late morning in peak season.
  • Expect winding roads. If you are prone to motion sickness, eat light before long drives and let your driver know so you can take breaks.
  • Carry a reusable water bottle. The Nilgiris district restricts single-use plastics, including small plastic water bottles.
  • Check entry rules if you're driving in. Vehicles from outside the district have at times needed an e-pass to enter the Nilgiris. Check the current rules before you travel.
