One day is enough to see Ooty's best-known sights, as long as you start early and visit them in a sensible order. This is the route our drivers usually follow for the Ooty Local Sightseeing (Full Day) package. It takes about eight hours with comfortable stops.
Morning: Doddabetta and the tea factory
Doddabetta Peak. Head out first to Doddabetta, the highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 m. Mornings usually have the clearest views across the hills before clouds build up, and the viewpoint is far less crowded before 10 am.
Tea factory and museum. On the way back down, stop at the tea factory on the Doddabetta road to see how Nilgiri tea is processed, from fresh leaf to finished tea, and taste a cup before you leave.
Late morning: the gardens
Government Botanical Garden. Laid out in 1848, the garden climbs the slope in terraces of lawns and flower beds and has a fossilised tree trunk on display. Allow an hour to an hour and a half.
Rose Garden. A short drive across town, the terraced Rose Garden holds thousands of rose varieties. It's at its best from April to June, but it's a pleasant walk in any season.
Break for lunch in town after the gardens.
Afternoon: Ooty Lake
Ooty Lake. Built in 1824, the lake has a boat house with rowing, pedal and motor boats. An afternoon boat ride is a relaxed way to finish the day. If you have time, the Thread Garden near the boat house is worth a quick look for its handmade thread flowers.
Tips for the day
- Start by 8 or 8:30 am, especially on weekends and in the summer season.
- Carry a jacket. Doddabetta is noticeably colder and windier than town.
- Keep the order flexible. If Doddabetta is covered in cloud, your driver can switch the order and come back later.
- Don't try to add Coonoor or Pykara. Each needs at least half a day of its own. See our two-day Ooty itinerary if you have more time.
